LGBT activist, author and speaker Chaz Bono - Sonny and Cher’s only son – has been spreading his message of acceptance and equality, under the scope of the media lens for almost two decades now. At the 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards, Bono was honored with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, which celebrates a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender person who has made a “significant difference in promoting equality.” Other notable recipients of this award include Ellen DeGeneres, Wanda Sykes, and Melissa Etheridge. In addition to receiving the night’s big honor, he also took home a trophy for Outstanding Documentaryfor Becoming Chaz, which follows his gender transition from female to male.
Out on the red carpet, RCT reporter Carly steel spoke to Bono about his commitment to the organization. “So much of how people think about our community is based on our representations in the media,” he said, “so it’s important.” Bono is no stranger to the organization, and has even previously served as GLAAD’s Entertainment Media Director.
Bono attended the awards dressed conservatively in a black, well tailored suit, complemented by a purple patterned tie. His hair was neat, though the star says it took “ a blow dryer and lots of products” to achieve that look. What’s Bono’s best fashion advice? “Make sure that your suit fits… and accessorize.”
